It was Mao Zedong's death that ended the cultural revolution. Moa Zedong died in September and in the fall of 1976 the revolution ended. It was however officially declared over in August of the next year. The reason his death was so influential in ending the Cultural Revolution was because it was Moa Zedong himself that started the revolution and with his death the revolution lost its main leader.
