In a food chain or energy pyramid, the amount of energy transferred at each succeeding trophic level reduces as compared to the previous trophic level. However, in case of toxic chemicals this flow of energy or food reverses and the amount of toxic chemical increases at each succeeding trophic level as compared to the previous trophic level. This mechanism of accumulation of toxic chemicals at higher trophic levels is known as bio magnification.
