The tobacco industry publicly states that ingredients added to tobacco products are intended to assist in the production process or to meet certain brand specifications. Many manufacturers claim that food and flavoring ingredients are included to balance the natural flavor of tobacco, to replenish the sugar lost in the curing process and to give the brands a distinctive flavor and aroma.
What manufacturers do not mention publicly is that some of these ingredients, such as sugar, in addition to improving the taste and irritation caused by cigarette smoke, also acts to enhance the ability of the product to cause dependence, and that some of these additives, after combustion, become toxic and carcinogenic substances. From this we can conclude that cigarette manufacturers purposely add carcinogens to cigarettes in order to give them a particular flavor.
