The first one was depicted as a "heart-palpitating event that seemed like an eternity." This shows the excitement of the folks in the mission control that their lunar module will be landing any time on the moon. Remember that it took long time before Apolo 11, a highly specialized aircraft, was sent to the moon.

The second paragraph shows how the astronauts, Aldrin and Armstrong, were also thrilled with the experience that they even claimed "magnificent desolation." Aldrin felt excited about, finally, being on the moon. He thought the moon was really beautiful!
