Diane Dodd, of Yale University, divided a fruit-fly population, raising some populations on a starch medium and others on a malt

ose medium. After many generations, natural selection resulted in divergent evolution: Populations raised on starch digested starch more efficiently, while those raised on maltose digested maltose more efficiently. Dodd then put flies from the same or different populations in mating cages and measured mating frequencies. Which of the statements is best supported by the data?

Answer:D) The starch adapted flies and maltose adapted flies are not different species but a reproductive barrier is forming between the two populations

Explanation: differences have accumulated within the populations to isolate them reproductively. The flies have chosen to mate with those like them.

Which of the following is TRUE about this reaction?
hoa [83]

The right answer is C

This process is called anaerobic respiration. It doesn't need dioxygen to occur (it can happen with or without O2).

Anaerobic respiration is a mechanism in which electrons pass through a chain of transporters whose final acceptor is a mineral substance other than oxygen, unlike aerobic respiration where the final acceptor is dioxygen. The final acceptor may be the nitrate ion (as in the case of Pseudomonas), carbon dioxyde or the sulfate ion.

Some bacteria (Pseudomonas) are able, anaerobically, to reduce nitrates to nitrites and then, depending on the case, to dinitrogen (with the enzyme Nitrate reductase A).

NO3- ==> NO2- ==> N2.

Name two types of substances that do not contain molecules with covalent bonds
nataly862011 [7]

The answers are the substances found in the simple compounds of Hydrogen, ammonia, methane and water and when they will undergo melting or boiling, there are weak 'intermolecular forces' that break them which is the reason why it is not a strong covalent bond.

How has waste leaving a cell affected its surface area to volume ratio?
lapo4ka [179]

The important point is that the surface area to the volume ratio gets smaller as the cell gets larger and as volume increases, surface area to volume ratio decreases. The larger a cell, the less easily it can get rid of waste and it also has more trouble getting water, nutrients and gases in. That is why we do not see giant cells. Instead we see multiple cells in larger organisms.

One way to increase surface area is to flatten the cell. That is why red blood cells are flat discs, instead of spheres. Another way is elongation. That is why many bacteria are rod shaped, and why neurons are elongated. In fact, the human body relies on the same principle to adapt to climate. Long tall and lean folks with long arms and legs live in East Africa, because such shapes increase surface area to get rid of excess body heat to avoid heat strokes. Europeans and Asians adapted to cold climates, in contrast, have shorter arms and legs and rounder torsos to minimize surface area. to conserve body heat.
