Answer:

One of the most important themes in the Gift of the Magi is that of wealth. What makes a person wealthy, or rich? What O. Henry wants to show is that the couple in the story are very rich and lucky, because even though they have no money, they have a very pure love, which is a lot more special.

He supports this theme through the use of irony. In the story, the irony lies in the fact that the couple want to give special presents to each other so badly, that they are willing to sacrifice their most prized possessions. However, these possessions are also the reason for their gifts. However, O. Henry implies that whether the gifts are fancy or not, and whether they lost their possessions or not, their true wealth lies in the fact that they are both willing to make sacrifices for each other.

stepladder [879]

Answer and Explanation:

I believe the mistake in the original sentence is caused by a dangling modifier. Let's take a look at it:

Preparing our dinner, the smell of the chicken made Ben hungry.

The underlined portion is the modifier. Notice the sentence sounds strange, even ambiguous. Usually, the modifier comes close to the noun it intends to modify. But, in this case, the closest noun is "smell". There is no way for the smell to be "preparing our dinner". That is what makes the sentence sound so strange.

To correct it, we need to change the modifier a bit in order to clarify to whom it refers. It could be "me", the speaker, or it could very well be Ben the one cooking dinner. Take a look at the options and see how much clearer they sound:

- While I was preparing our dinner, the smell of the chicken made Ben hungry.

- While Ben was preparing our dinner, the smell of the chicken made him hungry.
