Underproduction of pulmonary surfactant in IRDS leads to decreased compliance of alveolar tissue. Based upon this information, w

hich of the following must be true regarding pulmonary surfactant?A. Its adsorption to the water-alveolar interface increases surface tension, preventing alveolar collapse due to intra-thoracic pressure.B. Its absence decreases the minimum radial size of alveoli able to avoid collapse at a given pressure of inspired air.C. Its adsorption to the water-alveolar interface decreases surface tension, decreasing the pressure difference required to inflate the airway.D. Its presence increases the efficiency of gas exchange across the alveolar membrane by decreasing the surface area of the alveolus at a given pressure of inspired air.

Answer:

Option (C).

Explanation:

The alveoli is the main site of the exchange of gases in the human beings. The gases gets exchanged between the atmosphere, lungs and the body tissue.

The contraction of external intercostal muscles and diaphragm during inspiration leads to thoracic cavity expansion. This result in decrease in intrapleural pressure as compared with the atmospheric pressure. The air enters in the lungs. The elastic recoiling of the surface tension of airway and the water oppose the alceoli expansion. The surfactant gets adsorb at the water surface. This reduces surface tension, the force that resist expansion. The pulmonary compilance get increase.

Thus, the correct answer is option (C).

Diffusion continues until the concentration on both sides of the membrane is
Nataliya [291]

I don't completely understand the question, but I am guessing that you are trying to finish the sentence. If so, the answer is "Diffusion continues until the concentration on both sides of the membrane is <u>equal</u>". The reason it's equal is because diffusion always travels high to low, to reach a point of equilibrium. The particles are trying to move so that water is the same inside and outside of the cell/membrane, and the solute is also equal on the inside and outside of the cell/membrane. If that doesn't make sense, just comment any questions you have and I will try my best to answer :)

Refers to the basic processes by which sensory organs and the nervous system respond to stimuli in the environment, and ________
saveliy_v [14]

Answer:

SENSATION refers to the basic processes by which sensory organs and the nervous system respond to stimuli in the environment, and Perception refers to the meaningful interpretations extracted from it.

Explanation:

The receptors present in the body at different locations sense the changes in inner and outer conditions. A particular receptor is activated by specific stimuli such as thermoreceptors sense the change in the temperatures. This process of detecting the stimuli is followed by the transduction of the stimuli and generation of nerve impulses to send the information to the central nervous system. The whole process is called sensation.

The sensory information sent to the central nervous system is processed and interpreted mainly in the cerebral cortex. This is called perception.
