Once a trendy dessert found only in Los Angeles and New York, cupcakes have spread out to other parts of the country. Cupcakes h

ave become a popular treat that often trumps other desserts, like brownies and cookies. One of the reasons for their success is that some people view them as an affordable luxury because they're not as extravagant as a full course meal or a pair of shoes.
However, opponents of the cupcake trend question its popularity. They view cupcakes as merely small versions of cakes. In addition, they find the number of cupcake stores in a city baffling. For them, the popularity of cupcakes does not warrant the stores that open each month. This is because cupcake eaters cannot support all of these stores. Because of this, cupcakes may end up just as a fad.

Which of these best summarizes the first paragraph?

A) One of the most fashionable desserts to eat is the cupcake because it is inexpensive.

B) Desserts, like brownies and cookies, are overshadowed by the success of cupcakes.

C) Cupcakes are typically found in large cities, such as Los Angeles or New York.
