"The doctor told me that the major's wife, who was very young and whom he had not married until he was definitely invalided out of the war, had died of pneumonia. She had been sick only a few days. I think the mood is sad, and astonished. Sad because the girl died, who had not yet married the love of her life. Astonished because she had only been sick for a few days. No one expected her to die. They are now mouring her loss and a astonished that they have to do so.
