The bodies response that deals with anxiety which arises from unpleasant stimuli is known as the defence mechanism.
Defence mechanisms may be healthy or unhealthy depending on the consequences of the activation of defence mechanisms.
Unhealthy use of defence mechanisms causes a person to be in denial, justification of actions are confirmed by the use of rationalization. These represent repression which is not a healthy use of defence mechanisms.
Hence, defence mechanisms must be used in moderation.
Bystander effect or the bystander apathy as it is also known
is a psychological phenomenon which states that people are less likely to help
a person in need if a group of people is also present nearby. In the tragedy of Kitty Genovese not one
of the 38 neighbors called the police. This shocking death is one of the most
horrible examples of the bystander effect.
Honestly, I think the United States would eventually look the same as it does now. If they had not bought the land, they likely would have gone to war for it. It is very unlikely that they would have let it stay there as part of France or an independent country, both because of Manifest Destiny and for national security.
