Water has an important property named specific heat, which is an amount of heat required to increase the temperature of a given amount of a substance. So, to increase the temperature of 1 g water to one degree, the amount of heat is required is the specific heat of the water.
Specific heat helps in regulating the change in temperature of the earth due to its requirement of a proper amount of heat to increase the temperature of water to extent of boiling similar happen in colling as it is required to release a proper amount of heat.
