The United States used a variety of strategies in its efforts against the Soviet Union including both public and overt tactics as well as covert tactics. The United States publicly sought a policy of containment to "contain" Soviet expansion and to prevent countries from being influenced by the Soviet Union. Also the United States used diplomacy and other tools to prevent countries from growing closer to the Soviet Union. Also the United States and the Soviet Union had a long and diverse covert struggle against one another with the use of espionage and proxy wars to fight one another.
