In this problem we are given a right triangle with 45 degree angle. We know that the sum of a triangle's angles needs to be equal to 180 degrees.

When we subtract 90+45 from 180 we got 45. That means we have an isoceles triangle.

According to the Pythagorean Theorem, a^{2} +b^{2} =c^{2} .

When we plug in the numbers we get: a^{2} +b^{2} =10^{2}

Because we know that a = b, we can write this as:a^{2} +a^{2} =10^{2} or 2a^{2} =10^{2}

Simplify: \frac{2a^{2}}{2}  =\frac{100}{2}, then a^{2} =50

Take the square root: \sqrt{a^{2}}  =\sqrt{50} =>a=5\sqrt{2}

So, B is 5\sqrt{2}

To find it faster we have a formula for this: "If a right triangle has 2 equal angles, the hypotenuse is equal to \sqrt{2} times the leg."

Vice-versa: leg × \sqrt{2} = hypotenuse or leg = hypotenuse / \sqrt{2}

Problem 1

<h3>Answer: Choice C) x^2-4 </h3>

Explanation:

Use the difference of squares rule here.

That rule says (a-b)(a+b) = a^2-b^2

In this case, a = x and b = 2.

Problem 2

<h3>Answer: Choice B) 2x^2+7x+5</h3>

Work Shown:

(2x+5)(x+1)

y(x+1) ..... let y = 2x+5

xy+y

x(y) + 1(y)

x(2x+5) + 1(2x+5) ... plug in y = 2x+5

2x^2+5x+2x+5

2x^2+7x+5

===========================================================

Problem 3

<h3>Answer: Choice A)  -x^2-5x+7</h3>

Explanation:

The standard form of a quadratic is ax^2+bx+c, where a,b,c are real numbers. In the case of choice A, we have a = -1, b = -5, c = 7.

Problem 4

<h3>Answer: Choice D</h3>

Explanation:

Along the top we have three green rectangles. If each of them are of length x, then we have x+x+x = 3x so far. Then adding on a yellow piece of 1 unit leads to 3x+1 as the total horizontal width across the top.

Similarly, along the left side we have 1 green portion and 2 yellow leading to x+2. So this shows why this diagram represents (3x+1)(x+2)

A rectangle must be formed with the smaller pieces glued together. We cannot have any gaps or overlaps. The reason we're aiming for a rectangle is because the area of a rectangle is length*width. Think of (3x+1) as the length and (x+2) as the width.

)Why is 3 + (−5) equal to −2?
netineya [11]
Because + and - make - which makes you left with 3-5 which equals to -2 because it gets negative.

Answer:

\boxed{\text{1172 in}^{2}}

Step-by-step explanation:

SA = SA(prism) + SA(cylinder) – 2SA(cylinder base)

1. Surface area of rectangular prism

The formula for the surface area of a rectangular prism is

S = 2(lw + lh + wh)

Data:

 l = 16 in

w = 11  in

h = 11  in

Calculations:

2(Top + Bottom) = 2lw  = 2 × 16 × 11 = 352 in²

 2(Front + Back) = 2lh   = 2 × 16 × 11 = 352 in²

   2(Left + Right) = 2wh = 2 × 11 × 11  = <u>242 in² </u>

                                        Total area =  946 in²

2. Surface area of cylinder

A = A(top) + A (base) + A(side)  = 2A(base) + A(side)

Data:

d = 8 in

h = 9 in

Calculations:

r = ½d  = ½ × 8 = 4 in

\begin{array}{rcl}SA & = & 2\pi r^{2}+ 2\pi rh \\& = & 2 \times 3. 14\times 4^{2} +2\times 3. 14 \times 4\times 9\\& = & 6.28\times 16 + 226.08\\& = & 100.48 + 226.08\\& = & 326.56 \text{ in}^{2}\\\end{array}

3. Excluded area

Excluded area = 2A(base) = 100.48 in²

4. Total area

A = 946 + 326.56 - 100.48 \approx \boxed{\textbf{1172 in}^{2}}
