It was Latin America that was affected by this policy, which put forward the idea that thoughtful negotiations should take place first, but if they fail preemptive force should be used to prevent further crisis.

He believed that Latin American countries should be introduced to American democracy which would help all countries work together and trade together and things like that. The big stick policy was about the idea that if the countries decided not to cooperate and become democratic, that they should be forced to become democratic. The idea behind it was to use diplomatic negotiation, but always show how powerful you are and what would happen if the negotiations go wrong.
