Not to be confused with his son Mather Byles (loyalist)Portrait of Byles by John Singleton Copley

Mather Byles (born 26 March 1706, Boston, Massachusetts – 5 July 1788), was a clergyman active in British North America.

Byles was descended, on his mother's side, from John Cotton and Richard Mather and was a grandson of Increase Mather and nephew of Cotton Mather. As a young man, he corresponded with Alexander Pope and Isaac Watts.

Byles graduated at Harvard University in 1725, received his A.M. degree there in 1728 and in 1733 he became pastor of the Hollis Street Church (Congregational), Boston.

Byles held a high rank among the clergy of the province and was noted for his scholarly and well-written sermons, as well as his ready wit. He often exchanged poetic satires and parodies with another Boston wit of that time, Joseph Green. At state funerals, he was often a picked to give the sermon.[1]

Engraving of Mather Byles by Peter Pelham (1732–1739)

He published a book of verse, Poems on Various Occasions in 1744 (see 1744 in poetry). In 1773, he was chosen to be one of the eminent Boston literary intellectuals to examine Phillis Wheatley in order to determine if the black woman was actually the author of a proposed book of poems. (He and the rest of the panel determined that she was.)[2]

At the outbreak of the American Revolution, Byles was outspoken in his advocacy of the royal cause, and after the British evacuation of Boston his connection with his church was dissolved.

Byles remained in Boston, however, and subsequently (1777) was arrested, tried and sentenced to deportation. This sentence was later changed to imprisonment in his own house. (He called the sentry stationed outside the house his "Observe-a-Tory".[3]) He was soon released, but never resumed his pastorate.

He is known for saying "Which is better - to be ruled by one tyrant three thousand miles away or by three thousand tyrants one mile away?" A variation of the quote is spoken by Mel Gibson in the The Patriot.

Byles died in Boston on 5 July 1788, aged 82.

Besides many sermons Byles published A Poem on the Death of George I (1727).

PLEASE DO NOT DELETE THIS IS FOR A REASEACH PAPER!!!! need at least 4 people to respond
satela [25.4K]

Answer:

hello!

i am a sixteen year old teenage female who identifies as bisexual. my input, as unbiased as possible, is that there's no excuse to not be accepting of our community. while some may not agree with it due to religion, i don't think that's fair at all. why should a book that's been rewritten hundreds of times define your view on who loves who? there's also just a lot of hatred and disgust for it, but were all human, so how is that fair either? people tend to dislike our community and look down upon it because of stereotypes, and unfortunately that goes for any minority community nowadays. my input is simply that there's nothing wrong with the LGBTQ+ community, or the different things that come along with it, the issue lies in the people who have no accepted the change in modern day society, and see human rights as "opinions" or "political". i hope this helps out :)

Explanation:

if you see this, remember that silence is dangerous, and in order to make change happen, you have to take action.

Both men and women must be educated in order to
Illusion [34]

How does the central idea support the overall argument expressed in the controlling idea?

A) It shows the benefits of education for women in future generations.

B) It establishes the idea that women are not the only ones who benefit from equal education.

C) It illustrates how men can have improved education.

D) It demonstrates a negative result of improving women’s education.

Answer:

The correct answer is B) It establishes the idea that women are not the only ones who benefit from equal education

Explanation:

Wollstonecraft in his book "A Vindication of the Rights of Woman" made serial arguments for the education of women. One of such arguments was that women and men should be educated equally across all areas of life.

She states women can and should be educated in a rational way so that they can contribute to society.

She stated that since women were tasked with raising and educating children, society will degenerate if they (women) were left uneducated. And so on the co-education of men and women, she stated since there are married people whose marriages are the adhesive that binds society together, both genders should thus be educated after those people to learn from them to the end that society's fabric is preserved.
