Under the latifundia system Spanish conquistadors were rewarded with local villages and control over the local labor force. Latifundias were privately owned lands specialized in export agriculture such as grain, olive oil or wine. The economics and production of the crops depended solely on slavery. The laborers were forced in labor.

So they join the first group of seven states that earlier declared Independence from the UNION
