The group likely viewed the construction of new Spanish missions with suspicion was American Indian tribes.

The Spanish missions were Catholic missions which were established during the 16th – 19th centuries by the Spanish Empire in the period of the Spanish colonization of the Americas. The missions acted as the agents of the Church and State to preach and spread the faith to natives as well as placate them for the State's goals. Furthermore, the Spanish mission was a frontier institute that pursued the incorporation of the indigenous people in the region into the Spanish colonial empire, the Catholic religion, and specific elements of Hispanic culture through the formal establishment. The American Indian tribes viewed the Spanish missions with suspicions and distrust.
