Vasco da Gama was a Portuguese sea captain who led the first sea voyage from Europe to India. He revolutionized trade with his new route that went around the Cape of Good Hope at the southern most tip of Africa. Da Gama became a naval captain in 1492 and controlled the ships sailing along Portugal.
