If the direct speech is placed at the beginning of the sentence, you have to put a comma before the final quotation mark. You don’t have to use a full stop here in this place. Example: <em>“I have soccer practice first,”</em>
Besides, you have to use a comma after the reporting clause. Example:<em> Evan thought, </em>
The terminal full stop (.) is used before the closing speech mark. Example: <em>“then my violin lesson.” </em>
It is important to state that quotation starts with a capital letter, except when it is interrupted by a reporting clause; in this case the first letter of the continuation (or second quotation) is not capitalised: “<u>I</u> have soccer practice first,” Evan thought, “<u>t</u>hen my violin lesson.”
