debate about government.

Humanist is the concept that humans and rationale thought was the key to progress and salvation instead of a higher power or God.

Monarchs were believed to be sanctioned, or approved, by God. However, with humanist thinking, many believed that humans on their own could develops government best for themselves instead of one blessed by God. Many even began to question God's role in the lives of humans. Humanist thinking eventually sparked the Enlightenment which is a period of time filled in intellectual writing on society including government. This thinking produced the ideas of checks and balances, representative government, separation of church and state, natural rights, and suffrage.
