Solzhenitsyn gave terrifying accounts of the working conditions for prisoners, such as working in an outdoor construction site in the deep winter without proper equipment or clothing. The book covered one of the cruelest and blackest moments of human history, it showed how wicked man could be to mankind, prisoners were made to work without food, and some were killed at any slight mistake. What makes it so pathetic was the murder of tens of millions of innocent Soviet citizens by their own Government, and it happened mostly during the rule of Stalin, from 1929 to 1953.
