Answer:

15 feet by 13 feet.

Step-by-step explanation:

Let the length be x and the width be y  feet.

Perimeter:

2x + 2y = 56

Area:

xy = 195

From the second equation x = 195/y

Substitute for x in the fist equation:

2 * (195/y) + 2y = 56

390/y + 2y = 56

Multiply through by y:

390 + 2y^2 = 56y

2y^2 - 56y + 390 = 0

y^2 - 28y + 195 = 0

y = 13 , 15

Now substitute for y = 13 in  equation 1:

2x + 26 = 56

2x = 30

x = 15..

X is the length  so the length = 15 and the width = 13 feet.

A 24-foot piece of siding is cut into three pieces so that the second piece is twice as long as the first piece and the third p
Fudgin [204]

Answer:

Let x be the first piece, y the 2nd, Z the 3rd

You know all of the pieces together make 24 thus,

24 = x + y + z

The second piece is 2 times longer than the 1st so,

y = 2x

The 3rd is 5 times longer

z = 5x

Replace them in the equation of the beginning

24 = x + 2x + 5x

24 = 8x

x = 3 (First piece)

y = 6 (Second Piece)

z = 15 (Third Piece)
