In Dante's Divine Comedy (specifically the Inferno), it is harpies that torture people who chose to commit suicide. The people who committed suicide are stuck in trees in a forest and tortured by the harpies. This is supposedly a punishment for having taken their own life, as they instead face eternal torture rather than eternal life.
