He is mostly known for the subject of dance as majority of his artworks depict dancers and he is also regarded as one of the founders of impressionism. But he never liked people calling him impressionist as he always preferred being called as realist.  

Impressionism was originated in the year 1860 and from then on wards, it grew. Other impressionism usually portrayed natural light on their paintings of movement. However, Edgar Degas focused on the artificial light to portrayed in his paintings. This created a significant difference between their works.
