Es cierto que  cuando llegaron los Europeos a territorio Mesoamericano,  las ciudades Mayas estaban en ruinas o abandonadas. Se atribuye este fenómeno a que los historiadores piensan que las ciudades Mayas ya estaban deshabitadas desde hace cientos de años antes de la llegada de los Mayas.

De hecho, de acuerdo a las investigaciones de los historiadores modernos, antropólogos, y arqueólogos, los Mayas desaparecieron sin dejar rastro alguno. Es un verdadero misterio. Al día de hoy, no existe evidencia alguna que confirma una razón válida por la que los Mayas desaparecieron. Todas son teorías.

De ahí que las principales ciudades Mayas como Chichen Itzá, Tulum, Palenque o Bonampak, se hayan descubierto mucho tiempo después con gran dificultad ya que las ciudades quedaron atrapadas por la selva, llena de maleza y vegetación.
