The regimentation of German society was the result of both coercion and consensus.” (155) The Khmer Rouge held no popular support. They rose to power strictly with the use of fear and killing. The Khmer Rouge wanted people to do their bidding and be their farmers, but they really had no interest staked for the common person of Cambodia. The Nazi regime at least started out having the Germans revival as a culture in the forefront of their minds and plans. Nazi regime more or less depended on the intelligent elite to join their forces so that they could be used as pawns to spread their word. “…Teachers in the public school system were on of the most readily coordinated groups in Nazi Germany.” (159) Instead of murdering their intelligent, they used manipulation to help gain their popularity with their regime. The Nazi regime also cared a great deal about their people being healthy. “…the Nazis deemed a healthy body more important than a brilliant mind.” (160) The Khmer Rouge caused a rice shortage in Cambodia that caused starvation among the Cambodians. Many people died from this and Pol Pot did not care that Cambodians were dying under his reign. This is a direct contrast from how the Nazis provided for their supporters.
