An event that could be used for this example is that of colonialism. The most common view is that Europeans had a desire for exploration and finding new markets in other places of the world. They were able to use their technology in order to fuel this exploration, and when they encountered people in other countries, they dominated them due to their imperialist beliefs and their desire for wealth.

From a Marxist perspective, we could see colonialism as a struggle of different classes. Those who own the means of production of the world (colonizers) dominate those who only have their labor (locals) and they profit from their work without working themselves. The hierarchical and political structures that are then implemented are designed to maintain this status quo.

The interpretation of this event through different lenses affects the view we have of it. In the first case, the event is not as premeditated, economics plays a smaller role and the focus is on culture. From the second perspective, the event is seen as primarily economically motivated. Neither perspective is necessarily right or wrong.

sineoko [7]
