Mainly Germany was sinking U.S. merchant ships with their u-boats (submarines), and they tried to settle this issue many times before but failed every time. Finally, germany made the mistake of sending the Zimmermann telegram telling Mexico to attack and take back their old territories from the USA. Luckily european soldiers caught it before it made it to the Mexicans hands.
Fact USA was also funding Germany to stay neutral with both of the major battles.

The teacher was not even sure and could not remember was he ever teaching something like that, but nevertheless proceeded to court. Very famous lawyers got included in the case, and the case became very famous around the country. The end result was that the teacher was fined 100 $, but after that that was overthrown.
