They needed to keep their slaves otherwise it would have put them in serious debt and they would need to do the work themselves which was a lot due to the south was the biggest cotton producer in the world but, the north didn't want them to have slaves.
Basically they’re saying that Italians, Germans and Japan is the only group they can rely on. They will only trust each other and no one else. If they keep everything through marriage they will make each other more powerful. They can’t betray each other because they are “friends”. They can’t trust no one. It’s saying only marry Germans, Japanese and Italians. You can’t marry someone else for example: Americans, British people and so on because they are enemies. They will just bring you down and betray you.
