It is true that t<span>he first Christian images are complex and narrative.
You have to understand that this was a time when not many people actually knew how to read - reading was taught only to the rich. This is why many peasants couldn't read the Bible or be religiously educated. For this purpose, there were many Christian images which explained scenes from the Bible, giving a certain narrative to educate the crowds.

For example, purple was approximated by glazing blue over a reddish underpainting or vice a versa. Two, glazing creates, as we have said, an extraordinarily luminosity impossible to achieve otherwise. Only inherently transparent pigments, called lakes, are suited for glazing.
In Escher's drawing, it is not clear whether the water is flowing away form the viewer or towards the viewer. In many ways, it seems to contradict the laws of physics. Moreover, the corner points of the cube above the structure are connected in such a way that it is not clear which points are the farthest and which are the closest to the viewer. In these ways, the artist plays with our perception of depth.
