Two numbers have a difference of 0.7 and a sum of 1. What are the numbers

It's quite simple if you can understand how an equation works.

First, you get to interpret the given data.

You need to find two numbers,so let the numbers be x and y (you dont have to say which number is which, this is something that you are going to find).

So, now you start collecting the data.

The sum of the two numbers ( x and y as we said earlier) equals 1. So:

x + y = 1 (a)

Also, the difference of the two numbers (again x and y ) equals 0.7. So:

x - y = 0.7 (b)

Now we have collected the data in two statements. The statement (a) and the statement (b).Now, we get to solve the system of these two equations:

(a)→x=1-y

Thus, (b) equals to:

(b)→1 -y -y = 0.7

Going on with (b):

-2y=0.7 - 1→ -2y = - 0.3 → y = 0.15

So, since we have found the number y, we are able to solve one equation of those above ( we can solve (a) or (b) ).

I choose to solve (a).So:

x + 0.15 = 1 → x= 1 - 0.15 → x= 0.85

Now that you see that the numbers are found ( x= 0.85 and y=0.15 ) you can verify the equations (a) and (b) by using their arithmetic values.

A state's recidivism rate is 22%. This means about 22% of released prisoners end up back in prison (within three years). Su
storchak [24]

The probability that both of them go back to prison is 4.48%.

What is probability?

 • Probability is a measure of the likelihood of an event occurring.
 • Many events cannot be predicted with total certainty.
 • We can predict only the chance of an event to occur i.e., how likely they are going to happen, using it.
 • The probability of an event is a number between 0 and 1, where, roughly speaking, 0 indicates the impossibility of the event and 1 indicates certainty.

The state recidivism rate is given by 22%.

So, the probability that both of the prisoners will go back to prison will be:

 • = 22% × 22%
 • = 0.22 × 0.22
 • = 4.84%

Hence, the probability that both of them go back to prison is 4.48%.

A candy store owner has chocolate candies worth $2.50 per pound and sour candies worth $0.90 per pound. How much of each kind of
SVETLANKA909090 [29]

Answer:

Weight of chocolate candies = 30lbs

Weight of sour candies = 30lbs

Step-by-step explanation:

We are told in the question that :

Chocolate candies worth $2.50 per pound

Sour candies worth $0.90 per pound. How much of each kind of candies should she combine to get 60 lb of mixed candies worth $1.70 per pound?

Let x represent the number of pounds of chocolate candies

Let 60 - x represent the number of pounds of sour candies

Hence, we have the equation

x × $2.50 + (60 - x) × $0.90 = 60 × $1.70

= 2.5x + 54 - 0.9x = 102

Collect like terms

2.5x - 0.9x = 102 - 54

= 1.6x = 48

x = 48/1.6

x = 30 lbs

x represent the number of pounds of chocolate candies,

60 - x represent the number of pounds of sour candies

= 60 - 30

= 30lbs

Weight of chocolate candies = 30lbs

Weight of sour candies = 30lbs

Therefore, she should combine 30lbs of chocolate candies and 30lbs of sour candies to get 60 lb of mixed candies worth $1.70 per pound.
