Unlike mitosis, during meiosis the chromosome number is halved in sex cells.

Option C

Explanation:

Mitosis is the type of cell division where the cells produce daughter clones of themselves in sake of cell division and growth. But meiosis is the cell division which is occurring to maintain the chromosome number constant among the species, and also to facilitate the sexual reproduction.

Meiosis halves the chromosome number of the cells which are then called as gametes. During the sexual reproduction, these cells fuse with each other to produce the zygote with again the diploid number of chromosomes. Thus the chromosome number is maintained.
