Peasants, who were either serfs of freeman had the obligation to work on the land of the noble and received small benefits. They lived in small cottages, had to work practically the whole day, and usually were not even allowed to leave the property. Therefore their status in the society was very bad. They were not even allowed to marry without the consent of the lord.
