Quando se fala de Clonagem Humana, a maioria das pessoas pensa logo na criação de seres humanos idênticos a outro, mas a clonagem humana não é só isso.

A Clonagem Humana pode ser reprodutiva ou não reprodutiva (terapêutica). A primeira tem por objectivo criar um ser geneticamente idêntico a outro, como um gêmeo. A segunda tem por base a criação de órgãos e tecidos para fins terapêuticos.

A Clonagem Humana é apoiada pelos cientistas, enquanto as políticas, as religiosas e as morais, criam barreiras para clonagem humana, as quais formam um dos grandes temas do questionamento ético actual.

Igreja católica defende a existência de vida humana, desde a fecundação, como algo divino. "A vida humana é um dom de Deus, só Ele é senhor da vida,”  Não é permitido, destruir um embrião para obter células tronco, nem abreviar a vida de um ser humano para extrair órgãos para um transplante, a fim de salvar outra vida. Assim, a clonagem com finalidade terapêutica é rejeitada pelo catolicismo, pois quando se trata de extrair células tronco de um embrião acaba-se infringindo o mandamento"Não matarás". "O embrião já é uma vida, que deve ser respeitada por inteiro.”

Segundo a Sociedade Bioética a Clonagem Humana é antiética, pois crê não ser preciso desenvolver embriões para depois destrui-los uma vez que afirma que existem técnicas alternativas para se obter células-mães, como por exemplo o aproveitamento das células do cordão umbilical dos recém-nascidos, que é repleto de células que podem ser utilizados para a regeneração de tecidos.

Já a Sociedade tem o medo de que um clone não seja um “indivíduo” mas meramente uma cópia de “carbono” de alguém criou um sentimento de ofença mental pois a representação mental foi rapidamente configurada a bebês produzidos numa “fábrica biológica”.
