They don't communicate things like "I want the toy cars," or "May I have some of that sandwich?" As a student, communication to teachers is crucial. Things like "I need help on this" communicate to the teacher that maybe they need to touch on that a bit more. As a citizen, you want to communicate to your boss that you are a good businessperson. That's why you use friendly gestures like a nonverbal handshake, or in these times, an affirming nod. Miscommunication is a huge issue.
