Robin Williams had defined twelve core values which are present in the American society. They are work, personal achievement, humanitarianism, individualism, efficiency and practicality, progress, material comfort, science and rationality, democracy, equality, freedom, and racial and group superiority.

Shortly after the list was out, Henslin updated the same by adding education, religiosity, and romantic love, thus increasing the total to fifteen. Although these values are separate and distinct, sometimes they can be prone to conflicts if they exist simultaneously. One example includes the lack of possibilities for equality, racism and sexism to exist at the same time.
