Calcitonin is the hormone secreted in response to increased blood calcium level. It serves to reduce the blood calcium level by inhibition of osteoclasts to prevent bone resorption. Calcitonin also reduces the blood calcium level by increasing the loss of calcium into the urine.
The hormone calcitonin suppresses the tubular reabsorption of calcium in kidneys and allows more calcium to be excreted into the urine. The activity of this hormone is more in children to inhibit bone resorption.
Osteoblast activity
is inhibited so that calcium resorption from the bone is repressed.<span> Calcitonin also signals the kidneys to reduce the reabsorption of
calcium ions from urine hence increase its loss from the blood. </span>
