Male northern elephant seals (Mirounga angustirostris) compete with one another for territories along the beach and defend these

territories throughout the breeding season. The males that win the male-male competitions defend the "best" territories and have access to females that stay in that territory of the beach. The females land on the beach during mating season, chose which territory of the beach to join, and then disproportionately breed with the male that defends that area of the beach. At what point may intersexual selection occur in these elephant seals?

Options:

A. when the female is swimming to the beach

B. when the female lands on the beach and chooses her resting location

C. when the male defends his group of females against a different male

D. when the male mates with a female within his group

E. when the female leaves the beach after mating with a male

Answer:B. when the female lands on the beach and chooses her resting location.

Explanation: Elephant Seals are large and earless seals, they are of the Mirounga genus, these seals are classified into the Southern and Northern species.

Intersexual selection is a type of sexual selection that occurs between opposite sexes for example it is a type of sexual selection which takes place between a Male and female species.

when the female lands on the beach and chooses her resting location is the best and most appropriate time for intersexual selection to occur in the Elephant Seals.

I believe it’s gamete. Genotypes are traits that are genetic inherited. Phenotypes are traits you learn. Zygotes are a fertilized female egg.

What are the differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells? Focus on cells from microscopy lab?
pishuonlain [190]

Eukaryotic cells contain membrane-bound organelles, including a nucleus. Eukaryotes can be single-celled or multi-celled, such as you, me, plants, fungi, and insects. Bacteria are an example of prokaryotes. Prokaryotic cells do not contain a nucleus or any other membrane-bound organelle.

There are several key differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. Eukaryotic cells are found in multicellular plants and animals, whereas prokaryotic cells are found in bacteria and archaea which are ususlly unicellular. I have summarised the key differences below:

Prokayotic cells do not have membrane-bound organelles, such as the endoplasmic reticulum or mitochondria.

Prokaryotic cells do not have a nucleus, instead they have circular DNA that is free in the cytoplasm.

Prokaryotic cells have smaller ribosomes than eukaryotic cells.

Prokaryotic cells have a cell wall. Their cell wall is made from a different material to a plant cell, a glycoprotein called murein.

Prokaryotic cells may also have a protective layer called a capsule, flagellum to aid in movement and one or more plasmids.

Bioflix activity: meiosis -- comparing mitosis and meiosis can you identify the similarities and differences between mitosis and
Natali5045456 [20]
1. Similarities:
they are both processes of cell division by which cells reproduce.
They share several steps of the process(prophase, metaphase, anaphase e telophase, cytokinesis) but meiosis has another division also with those same steps.
In both cases the cell duplicates its DNA by pulling it apart into two sets, place the sets on each end of the cell, and then divide down the middle.

Both produce new cells based on their parent cells' genes.

2. The differences:

Mitosis:

- has 1 division per cycle
- one cell produces 2 new cells
- the genetic information in the mother-cell and the daughter-cells are the same. ( the number of chromosomes is also the same)
- it occurs in somatic cells
Meiosis:
- two divisions per cycle.
- one cell when divides produces 4 new cells
- the new cells have different genetic information. mixes the the genetic material from the parent cells
- the number of chromosomes of the daughter cells is half of the mother's.

Carolus Linnaeus developed a two-part naming system to refer to all living organisms. The two-part name, known as binomial nomen
Tju [1.3M]

The correct binomial nomenclature for humans is H. sapiens, in which H. is genus and sapiens is species.

What is binomial nomenclature?

The binomial nomenclature is a two-term naming system in which the name of every species is named specifically.

This naming system was developed by Carolus Linnaeus.

It is written as a genus with the following species.

For example the scientific name of the dog is Canis (genus) familiaris (species).

Thus, the scientific name of humans is H. sapiens.
