The Mongols who invaded China did not come from the tundra regions of North Asia. In fact, the Mongols came from what is now Mongolia, and from China's Inner Mongolian Autonomous Region, as well as the plains of Russia. Their territory comprises what is known as the Mongolian Plateau, a central Asian Plateau that includes the Gobi Desert and the dry steppe regions.
