Anna35 [415]

The correct answers are: “He is rather self-righteous” and “He considers himself to be a role model to others”. Taken from the “The Tenth Story” within the book “The Decameron” by Giovanni Boccaccio (1353), the speech presented in the excerpt above narrates the moment when Gualtieri explains the purpose of his tormenting Griselda all the previous years. Gualtieri reveals that he did all that in order to show her “how to be a wife” and to teach people “how to choose a keep a wife”, since he considered himself to be a role model. The speech also describes Gualtieri’s personality, since he was too proud of his own moral behaviour and beliefs, in a way that annoyed other people. In fact, it is mentioned in the excerpt above that people despised his behaviour (“and for those who considered me a cruel and bestial tyrant”). This is why one could describe him as a self-righteous person.

A noun phrase is a word or a set of words including a noun, whose function in a sentence can be: to act as a subject, an object or a prepositional object.

Sentence A is not a noun phrase. it is a prepositional phrase functioning as the postmodifier of the noun phrase (a lovely bouquet).

Sentence B is a noun phrase functioning as the subject of the sentence.

Sentence C is a noun phrase functioning as a direct object.

Sentence D is not a noun phrase, as it is a dependent clause and has not nouns in it.

Read this excerpt from "A Letter from Birmingham Jail" by Martin Luther King Jr.:
attashe74 [19]

It has a negative connotation, suggesting instability and stymied progress.

A connotative meaning is something that is associated to or an expression carried by the dictionary meaning of the word. The possible connotation of “quicksand” is “instability and stymied progress” as its primary meaning which is an area/situation that is difficult to escape can be associated to describe the racial injustice of the nation, as the excerpt says.
