Vasco da Gama was a Portuguese explorer. He is significant for being the first European to reach India by sea. The route da Gama discovered was also the first to link Europe and Asia by sea.
This was a significant discovery as it encouraged the establishment of the Portuguese as an imperial and colonial power in Asia. It also allowed them to trade with India without having to cross the Mediterranean or the dangerous Arabian peninsula.
