Literacy tests were used around the 18th and 19th century as part of the voter registration process in southern states of the U.S. Along with poll taxes, residency and property restrictions and extra-legal activities (violence and intimidation) were all used to deny suffrage to African Americans. This violates the principles of a democratic society as African Americans were treated unfairly regarding the voting registration process and creating inequality. literacy tests would violate the principles of a democratic society as they were intended to disenfranchise (to deprive one’s right to vote) racial minorities.

Explain how modernist literature related to the prominent issues and ideas of the 1920s
Alex17521 [72]

Modernist literature originated during the first part of the 19th century along the United States and Europe. The works of Sigmund Freud and Ernst Mach are believed to have influenced modernist literature. The main idea behind this movement was to break the traditional model of writing, both in poetry and fiction. Modernist writers aimed at trying to reflect the changes that society was going through at that time. This included the events going on during the first World War and how that affected the populations. Controversial themes such as defiance to predefined political models and anarchy came from this period.
