Answer:

Thomas Putnam accuses his neighbors of witchcraft so that he can cheaply buy their land.

Explanation:

The Crucible (1953) is Arthur Miller's tragedy play in which many innocent people of Salem are falsely accused of witchcraft, arrested, tried wrongly and nineteen of them are hanged to death.

There are many references throughout the play that Thomas Putnam is a greedy and rich landowner who want to grab other's property/land by hook or by crook. He accuses not only John Proctor of witchcraft but many others of his neighbors as well.

Some references from the playing mentioning this fact are;

Putnam: <em>Why, we are surely gone wild this year. What anarchy is this? That tract is in my bounds, it’s in my bounds, Mr. Proctor. </em>

Proctor: <em>In your bounds! indicating Rebecca: I bought that tract from Goody Nurse’s husband five months ago. </em>

Putnam: <em>He had no right to sell it. It stands clear in my grand-father’s will that all the land between the river and</em>

Proctor:<em> </em><em>Your grandfather had a habit of willing land that never belonged to him, if I may say it plain.</em>

And

Giles Voice: "<em>Thomas Putnam is reaching out for land!"</em>

Giles:<em>"And there is none but Putnam with the; coin to buy so great a piece. This man is killing his neighbors for their land!"</em>

There are many themes in Fugard’s play. Consider the theme of how apartheid affects interracial relationships. Hally, because of
sesenic [268]

In the play, we see that Sam, Willie and Hally are normal people who get along. However, the first two are black, older men, while Hally is a seventeen-year-old white boy. This has serious consequences in South Africa during apartheid.

During apartheid, black and white people were separated, and they were not allowed to intermingle in any significant way. Moreover, white people were given preference in all matters. This plays a role in the play when Hally spits on Sam, even though they were meant to be friends. Hally is acting out of character, and he immediately regrets his actions. He was extremely upset due to his very complex personal problems.

However, this is a sign of superiority and racism, and it is something a friendship cannot tolerate. Although Sam eventually wants to fix things, Hally is too embarrassed to be friends with him again. I believe that the decision Hally will make is that of not being friends, as he is not a hopeful or positive person. He is more likely to fall into his privileged position and close the door to the friendship.
