I'd go with Markus Zusak "The Book Thief". The book is set in Nazi Germany from 1939-1943 and is about a foster girl, whose real parents were taken away due to their political views. Throughout the book she realises that the things that the Nazi regime is saying about the Jewish population is untrue as she meets a Jew and forms a remarkable friendship with him. She realises that everything that people in power say isn't true, so in that way she matures.
Reading critically involves questioning a text.
<u>To read a text critically means to engage in an active way of reading</u>, that is, to read in a deeper way. Reading critically is more than just getting what the text is about.<u> It is about analyzing and evaluating the information that is being presented in order not to become a 'passive reader'</u>, a reader that takes the information that receives without questioning it.<u> Critical reading is important for the reader to build his/her own viewpoint about a specific topic</u>.

For a banquet, vegetables, if any—in England, they rarely appear on feast menus—were vastly outnumbered by a parade of roasts or fish of all kinds, and more elaborate dishes. Even the pottages were usually ones considered as special treats, such as frumenty (a wheat or barley pottage) with venison, or a blancmange of chicken or fish in spiced almond milk, usually also containing rice.
