A family, its structure and the roles that this structure conveys to the members in a family form, is a social convention that adopts current social norms and standards. As such, it can, and indeed, it does change, through time and through different cultures. Family roles, like that of provider or caregiver have seen notable changes in just the last few decades in most parts of the world, not being limited to gender roles, which have also experienced relevant changes lately.
