Taltson Lake is in the Canadian Northwest Territories. This lake has many Northern Pike. The following data was obtained by two

fishermen visiting the lake.
Let x = length of a Northern Pike in inches and let y = weight in pounds.
Use your calculator to draw a scatter diagram.
Using the scatter diagram (no calculations), would you estimate the linear correlation coefficient to be positive, close to zero, or negative?

x (inches) 20 24 36 41 46
y (pounds) 2 4 12 15 20

The sample correlation coefficient r is equal to 0.9962

The linear correlation coefficient is positive. -1 ≤ r ≤ + 1.
0.9962 is nearer to +1. Thus, the linear correlation is positive.
