The observation of rocks in several mountainous belts that today are separated by oceans provides evidence of continental drift.  Continental drift is the displacement of continental masses relative to each other. The Appalachian mountain belt in eastern North America ends off the coast of Newfoundland. Mountains of the same age with rocks and similar structures are found in the British Isles and Scandinavia, when these land masses come together, the mountain ranges form an almost continuous belt.
