The Absolute value bars act as the P in PEMDAZ (The P = Parenthesis but it really just means any containing symbols ( (), {}, [], || ) so you distrubute -2 into the bars resulting in the numbers becoming negative then you follow the steps down :)
-2|3x+1|+4=-10 sutract the 4 from negative 10. -2|3x+1|=-14 Divide -14 by -2. |3x+1|=7 By now you can remove the lines. Minus 1 from 7. 3x=6 Divide 6 by 3. x=2.
SECOND ANSWER -2|3x+1|+4=10 For second answers you turn the number to its opposite, so -10 is now 10. First subtract 4 from 10. -2|3x+1|=6 Then divide 6 by-2. |3x+1|=-3 Now this is when you stop. An absolute value can NEVER equal a negative. For this equation there is only one answer.
