Answer: Meiosis is important because it helps to sexually reproduce offsprings with diploid number of chromosomes and enables genetic diversity in a population. Without meiosis, gametogenesis (production of new gametes) can not occur.

Meiosis is a type of cell division in which parents' cells undergoes division twice to produce four daughter cells each with half the number of chromosomes of the parents. In meiosis, a diploid cell undergoes division to produce a haploid cell and two haploid cells combine to form a diploid offspring. Meiosis occurs in sex cells or gametes. The crossing over of genes that occurs in meiosis allows the combination of the two parental (paternal and maternal) genes resulting in an offspring in which either of these genes is expressed
