In canada the city was loud, busy, and crowded with lots of people roaming from place to place. For the second question, life in a Canadian city in the 1850's would have been a lot less populated and nothing would've been set quite yet. Compared to today where it is its own country and lots of people have migrated there since the 1850's. Hope this helps
